Preventing Knee Replacement With Options That Do Not Require Surgery

Osteoarthritis is a common joint disease that affects millions of American adults. Osteoarthritis of the knee, an often painful condition, involves a loss of articular cartilage that typically covers the ends of the bones within the knee-joint. Typically there is about 5 mm of cartilage covering the ends of the two bones within the knee-joint.
If you have osteoarthritis of the knee, the articular cartilage that normally covers the ends of these bones and provides cushioning breaks down. Once there is widespread loss of articular cartilage within the knee-joint it cannot be replaced with new cartilage. This leads to symptoms including pain, loss of motion, swelling and stiffness. Further, bone spurs also start to develop in the knee-joint.
As reported by the CDC, people with past knee injuries and people who are severely overweight or obese are at an increased risk of osteoarthritis in the knee.
Treatment Options for Osteoarthritis in the Knee
There are a variety of treatments for osteoarthritis. Some people opt for a surgical option like total knee replacement. In addition, there are also many ways to treat the condition that do not involve surgery. Knee replacements give some patients significant pain relief and in other patients total knee replacement can actually cause more pain. In addition, knee replacement surgery comes with risks that include blood clots and infections. Other medical complications sometimes associated with a total knee replacements are heart attacks, stroke and blood loss requiring transfusion.
It's also important to recognize that joint replacement does not last forever. There are scientific studies that show that replaced joints may need more work after a period as short as 10 years. Non-surgical options for osteoarthritis in the knee can help to cut pain, decrease stiffness, improve muscle strength and increase the knee's range of motion.
Treatment for Knee Arthritis that does not Involve Surgery
The non-surgical treatment of knee arthritis focuses on pain reduction, strength improvement and increasing range of motion while reducing stiffness. Nonsurgical treatment options for osteoarthritis in the knee include:
1) hyaluronic acid injections,
2) unloader knee braces,
3) PRP (platelet rich plasma) and
4) physical therapy.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring fluid in the knee. With osteoarthritis, the composition of the hyaluronic acid in the knee changes. Typically it is a thick fluid that lubricates the knee joint. With the advancement of osteoarthritis, HA loses its normal properties and becomes thin and watery.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections only cause minor discomfort. The injection is performed in the doctor's office and takes less than 20 seconds to do. There are several different brands of hyaluronic acid on the market. Some brands require a series of three injections and others are just one shot. HA injections can give pain relief for up to a year or more in patients with osteoarthritis. If you are allergic to egg products, you are not eligible for the injections.
Unloader knee braces are another nonsurgical option for treating osteoarthritis in the knee and reducing pain. Most patients with knee osteoarthritis will have one side of the knee where the osteoarthritis is less advanced. The outer half of the knee joint is often less affected by osteoarthritis while the inner half of the knee is more commonly affected. The brace, called an "unloader," unloads the half of the knee that has more osteoarthritis and forces the person to place more weight on the "good" side of the knee.
The unloader knee brace is good to use during activity including going shopping, walking to work, or engaging in a sporting activity. It's important to note that the leg must accommodate a brace.
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is now one of the hottest topics being researched in orthopedic medicine. Platelet rich plasma is used to treat a range of orthopaedic conditions including plantar fasciitis. The process involves drawing blood peripherally from the patient and then separating out the blood that is rich in plasma. The platelet rich plasma used for treatment has important components of the blood that have the potential to heal. This process is easily performed in the doctor's office.
Physical therapy is another way to help reduce the symptoms of knee arthritis. There are three types of exercises for patients with knee arthritis: flexibility, resistance and cardiovascular.

Side Effects of Smoking on Health

Lungs are the only organ in the body which are directly exposed to the outside atmosphere. They come in to the closest contact with it through the air they breathe in. With the air various pollutants of the atmosphere-smoke, dust, fumes, car exhaust, industrial waste and gases, house dust, and worst of all, self pollutant, tobacco smoke are also inhaled. These foul elements have damaging effects on the air tubes(bronchi) and lungs through their chemical, mechanical and allergic actions. Microbes, which effects the lungs, and cause various diseases, also gain entry via the air we breathe in. But for the extremely effective defense mechanisms provided to us by nature, we would be perpetually ill.
Effects of Air Pollution and Smoking
There is a limit to which body defenses can work. They do sometimes breakdown, resulting in disease. The cumulative effects of these pollutants, the most harmful of which is tobacco smoke, cause chronic inflammation of the bronchi(chronic bronchitis) with persistent cough and sputum. There are periods, especially in the winter months, when the symptoms are exacerbated due to some infecting micro-organisms which also play their part. While bronchitis is not uncommon in city dwellers, it is extremely common in smokers. Some of these cases develop walls of the air spaces of the lung tissue. The lungs consequently become hyper inflated(emphysema). As emphysema worsens, the capacity to breathe in air is progressively reduced, causing lack of oxygen, retention of carbon dioxide and strain on the heart. The patients becomes breathless on the slightest exertion. The lungs and heart may ultimately fail in their function. These problems are prone to infections in the lung. The chronic bronchitis, which had started in the younger age, becomes worse as age advances, and so does, the emphysema. So, if you suffer from bronchitis, you would do well to stop smoking. You are also urged also start living in a pollution-free atmosphere. If you are retired or nearing retirement, it may be possible for you to choose the place where you would finally settle down. Industrial Pollutants

CPR and First Aid Training Can Be Useful For Saving Human Lives

CPR is the short form of Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation which is a procedure performed to restore the functions of breathing and blood circulation. It is a short emergency procedure which saves your life in case you had cardiac arrest. CPR and first aid training are given to patients who have lost their normal breathing and it should be performed quickly and effectively before taking the patient to the hospital. The procedure of CPR is simple and you can easily learn it if you get trained.
The patient should be made to lie down on the floor and his chest should be compressed for minimum 5cm deep and the rate of compression made should be at least 100 times per minute. By making the pumping action the patient is helped to restore his breathing functions and blood circulation. Apart from this training is also given to give breathing by exhaling air into the mouth of the patient. Sometimes special devices are used for pumping air into the lungs of the patient. This procedure of giving artificial respiration is called ventilation.
In any case of emergency, CPR alone is not sufficient to recover the patient. It can help to regulate the blood flow to the brain and to delay the tissue death of the brain. Further the patient should be given electric shock using defibrillation technique to restore the functions of the heart. If you take training in proper training institutes you can help the patient to recover in crucial moments. When someone gets heart attack, everybody in the room will be in a state of shock and panic so that no one would offer to do something immediately. In such cases within few seconds of heart attack, the person will be unable to breathe and it stops the blood supply to the brain.
The brain damage will advance gradually and in some cases it may end up the life. In such a situation you need not go in search of a doctor. Anyone who has undergone CPR training can help to save the patient's life. You can just spring into action and provide artificial respiration and facilitate the blood supply to the heart by effective CPR method.

If you turn on the television, or check the internet, I am sure you will see something about antioxidants and how important it is to your overall health and wellness! There is so much information out there, you can easily get overwhelmed and just give up for the fact that you don't know who or what to trust! (Thanks multi-level marketing systems). (Just my opinion there).
Well the good news is, there is some relief as I do my best to give you the good bad and ugly regarding your health and wellness. IBS Is Not an Auto-Immune Disease

IBS treatment should not be centered on treating an auto-immune disease. IBS, as well as Crohn's disease, leaky gut syndrome, and colitis are not auto-immune diseases. The associated symptoms that people experience with these disorders are a reaction of the immune system, but it is not the cause. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea and the presence of blood and mucous in the stool has its root cause in another area.
Although you may be diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, a doctor will typically not be able to explain its cause to you. The truth is that this condition is easily explained. It is simply the digestive juices eating away the lining in your colon. The cause of the lining becoming weaker is most often antibiotic medication. Once a hole develops, undigested material slips through the hole and enters your blood stream.
At this point, your immune system kicks in and attacks the food particle as an invader in the blood. It is the immune system that acts in a way that produces the symptoms associated with a condition such as IBS or Crohn's disease. The root cause however, is not the immune system, but the lining in the intestines.
When you visit a doctor, he will recognize that the immune system is causing the problem but may not recognize what is triggering the immune system's response. This may lead to improper treatment with medication designed to suppress the immune system instead of treating the problem of deterioration of the intestinal lining. Treatment should center on saving the lining of the colon before it becomes too late for anything but surgery.
Once you know the cause, IBS treatment becomes much easier and effective. The key to getting this treatment is to seek an alternative option, like a second opinion from a naturopathic doctor who does not make a diagnosis based upon conventional medical approaches. This type of doctor will be able to understand your problem. Six Weeks to a Healthier You

Week 1: DRINK MORE WATER!

Try adding one glass/day each day of this week so by the end of the week you are drinking up to eight glasses of water. I've found it easiest to drink one glass in the morning while getting ready for work, and bringing four 16oz bottles of water with me to work to drink throughout the day. To add a little flavor to your water, try adding slices of oranges or lemons to your water for a sweet drink. Week 2: PRACTICE COOKING!
Okay, I know, this might sound like a huge stretch from the first week of just adding water to your day, but practicing cooking doesn't have to be labor intensive, it could be as simple as making brown rice (which you just put in a pot, 2 C boiling water, 1 C brown rice, 50 minutes on the stove on low), making a smoothie in your blender with frozen berries and a banana and coconut water, or taking 10 minutes to chop veggies for a salad. There are great recipes located on my website, or you can simply do a Google search for a recipe using something you've got on hand. The other day I did a Google search for recipes using grapefruit, I found a fabulous recipe on allrecipes.com which included many items that I had on hand for a Quinoa Salad with Grapefruit, Avocado and Arugula, the items I didn't have on hand I just didn't include. Be creative with your meals, they don't have to be time consuming to be healthy and taste great! If you have children involve them in your practice, this is great "bonding" time as well as teaching time for your family. Cook with your significant other for a great date! Cooking styles include juicing, blending, steaming, boiling, and stir frying.
Week 3: INCREASE WHOLE GRAINS
Whole grains are very important source of vitamin B, iron, dietary fiber, and vitamin E. Cooking a large pot of brown rice, quinoa, or couscous at the beginning of the week can last you several days. For a quick breakfast, just dress your grains as you would oatmeal (another great grain by the way). You can add frozen veggies to brown rice and quinoa for a quick meal or snack and couscous makes a great side dish (add dried fruits for a sweet taste). Whole grains can be bought in bulk at your natural food store, this is the least expensive way to purchase, when you bring the grains home, store in a glass jar with a tight lid because grains can go rancid. Make sure to rinse off your grains as they do contain an outer layer of natural oil. Quinoa has a natural coating called sapotin which must be rinsed off. This coating is quinoa's natural protector and can cause a negative reaction especially individuals who have rheumatoid arthritis. Try to add ½ cup of whole grains to your day each day this week. The easiest way to do this is to have oatmeal at breakfast or make some brown rice and add veggies for a quick lunch with some sesame oil and rice vinegar. I also like to sprinkle a few sesame seeds into my brown rice for a nutty taste.
Week 4: INCREASE SWEET VEGETABLES
Increasing your intake of sweet vegetables can satisfy your sweet tooth. According to the Institute for Integrative (IIN) Nutrition sweet vegetables can soothe the internal organs of the body and energize the mind. Sweet root vegetables help keep you grounded and balance any sort of spacey feeling you may have. Some examples of sweet vegetables include carrots, onions, beets, winter squash, and sweet potatoes. Include these sweet vegetables in stir fry dishes or choose a variety of sweet vegetables, add water to a cooking dish and bake in the oven until they soften. Add some beans or tofu for a protein boost! Red and yellow bell peppers are great as a topping on pizza with tomatoes. This week try to incorporate at least 1 sweet vegetable in your day. It can be as easy as adding carrots to hummus, or steaming some beets and adding them to your salad.
Week 5: INCREASE LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES
Dark green leafy vegetables benefit your body by purifying your blood, preventing cancer, improving circulation, strengthening your immune system, promoting healthy intestinal flora, improving liver, gall bladder and kidney function, and clearing congestion in the lungs according to Institute for Integrative (IIN) Nutrition. Leafy green vegetables include broccoli, bok choy, napa cabbage, kale, collards, watercress, mustard greens, arugula, lettuce, mesclun, spinach, Swiss chard and beet greens. The easiest way to increase leafy veggies is to eat a salad every day, just include this with one of your meals or in place of one of your meals. You can also steam, saute, or boil greens. Boiling these vegetables helps them plump up but make sure you only boil them for a minute, otherwise the greens lose valuable nutrients.
Week 6: ADD REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TO YOUR DAY
Okay, unless you live in New York City and are able to walk to work, walk to the store, walk to the park and walk around the park, you could probably use more physical activity in your day. I myself work in Boulder, one of the healthiest cities in America and I still feel like I could use more physical activity. Physical activity is not only great in quickening your weight loss; it also increases your mental health and can relieve stress. A really easy way to incorporate physical activity to your day is to take a 30 minute walk during your lunch hour at work, add a 10 minute break in your morning and afternoon if possible and walk around your building (outside). I figured out that a walk to the grocery store for me from my apartment takes 20 minutes so by walking to the store, getting only what I can carry in my backpack at a reasonable weight and walking back home is a great workout and 2 mile walk.
